Why Are You Here?

whyAt a very young age most of us were forced into the education system of our respective communities.  Since that day we’ve been going to school year after year, class after class, test after test, and most of us have never really stopped and asked ourselves the simple question “Why am I here?”

I sit in a lecture hall and look around… Most students are paying less than 50% of their attention to the professor who is working his butt off trying to keep genetics interesting while still getting through the material in a timely manner.  Some students are texting, others doodling, and still others are on facebook/myspace/twitter/(insert time waster here).  A few are even sleeping.  Not only is this offensive, but it makes me wonder if they even know what they are doing here.  They can’t possibly know, otherwise they would respect what they are experiencing.

Try this simple exercise.  When it comes to anything that you aren’t exactly exited about doing, ask yourself this, “Why am I here?”  School, work, family reunions, first dates, public speeches, and pretty much everything else we’ve done that we weren’t immediately excited about doing, if we just asked ourselves this simple question, we would understand it’s purpose, and it might even change our perspective on the experience.  And as an added bonus, if it still doesn’t seem worth it, we can cut it out of our life and know that it was for the better.  Nobody wants to continue doing something without purpose, right?

Why am I in college? I go to college because I want to educate myself on the complexity of the world, the human body, and the purpose of existence.  I sit in genetics because this professor has something to offer me that I cannot truly obtain alone.  I have paid thousands of dollars, and given up time that I could have used to make money, so that I might obtain this formal education.  I am here because I want to be.

Why do I blog? I blog because there are too many students out there without the proper knowledge of how to truly experience college life.  I found that when I serioused up (which took a while) and started living prolificly my life changed, and every experience was so much greater.  They were greater because I chose to experience them, instead of just reacting to what life threw at me.  I write so that I can help other students learn from my experiences without having to make the mistakes I’ve made.

Why do I work out every night? I go to the gym because I love life, and because I have found that a fit mind and body allow for greater experiences in life.  Lifting weights, swimming, and playing basketball are therapeutic for me.  They are a release from the stress of day to day life.  I work out because it is a form of improving myself, and my largest life goal is to become the best version of myself that I can.

So I guess you have to ask yourself, “Why are you here?” Why do you do the things you do?  Sure some of the things you do will have to change, but in the end, every experience will be so much richer.

If you’ve made it this far, you obviously think that I have something worth knowing.  So you like ZCL?  Why? Why are you really here?
