I think that the oft-quoted 80/20 rule is definitely something to keep in mind. Instead of attempting to maintain a large network of acquaintances, I prefer to have a few close friends, with whom I have frequent meaningful contact. College, if nothing else, is an opportunity to hone one's time-management skills. I believe the acquisition of this skill to be the single most important outcome of any "formal" education.
