5 Simple Characteristics of Successful People

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

crossing-finish-lineIn an effort to model my lifestyle with that of successful men and women, I realized that I needed clear and simple definition of the success lifestyle in order to mimick it.  You know what they say, “Fake it till you make it.”  I may not be wildly successful today, but with discipline and affirmation I can surely develop into someone with all the habits that a successful person has.  Then it’s just a matter of seizing opportunity and making the world pay attention.

So I’m going to keep it simple and easy to remember;  5 distinct characteristics that will inevitably lead you and me to greater success and life fulfillment.  Remember, naming the characteristics is the easy part;  developing each of them will require greater effort on your part. (more…)

Diff’rent Strokes for Diff’rent Folks

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

As I sat in the library today, furiously typing out my philosophy paper, I took notice of the gorgeous weather outside and a sudden desire to wander down to the Tidal Basin and sit in the presence of the monuments overwhelmed me.  After wrapping up my draft, I set about to satisfy my desires.  I was immediately faced with the question of how I would reach my destination: would I hop on the shuttle bus to the Metro station and take the subway down?  Would I grab a taxi? Would I walk the most direct way through town?  Or would I take the scenic route along the Potomac River?  All four alternatives would lead me to the very bench that I now sit on as I type this post; the difference would be the experience of the journey to reach my goal.

Lemons, Lemonade, and Grape Juice

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Although I strive to keep a positive outlook on like I won’t deny it: sometimes, life just sucks.  Nothing seems to go your way, no matter how hard you try.  Just when it seems like things are finally turning around, something else goes wrong and sends us back to square one.  We’ve all experienced at least one of these stretches.  I’m fighting my way out of one right now.

The good news?  We have the power within us to break out of these slumps and emerge stronger than ever, but only if we choose to make this slump a learning experience.  The old cliché goes, “When life gives you lemon, make lemonade.”  I feel that this statement doesn’t go deep enough.  To me, this old maxim implies simply taking the bad and finding something good to turn the bad into something acceptable. Be Extraordinary

I must be embarking on a philosophical time in my life, because I’ve been thinking a lot about what this life is about, what the purpose is, and what it will take for me to be the best version of myself.  Through my philosophical journey I have studied many people which I consider to be extraordinary.  These people do more than we do, they work harder than us, sleep less, and persevere through whatever is thrown their way.  These people change the world.  And contrary to popular belief, these people are no more special, gifted, or have any talent that you and I could not develop. The Key to Enjoying Life

key-2

I know this is far off from the type of subjects I usually write about, but this has been on my mind for a while now.  I’ve been reading 3 Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, and I have been thinking a lot about fulfillment, and what it means to consider one’s life a success.

It seems that somehow we are tricked into thinking that life is about attaining status and wealth.  We are conditioned to respond to getting a raise by buying new things that we couldn’t afford before.  We attend big fancy universities with a vocational mindset, hoping to get hired by a big fancy company or start a great new company, all with the goal of gaining great financial success.  But is that journey the kind of life we would truly enjoy? Achieve Michael Phelps-like Success

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Michael Phelps is probably the most well known Olympian today. He holds 16 Olympic Medals, 8 of which he won recently in Beijing.   His success, though, is no accident.  He’s no freak of nature, nor is he genetically engineered to swim.  Phelps attributes his success to his hard work, dedication, planning, and practicing.   He practices 365 days a year, with 2-a-day practices 145 days a year.  With this much hard work and dedication, it’s almost impossible to not do well.
