Devry University History

The history of DeVry University can be traced back to the early 1930s, when Dr. Herman DeVry founded the DeForest Training School in Chicago. This school was later renamed DeVry Technical Institute and the DeVry Institute of Technology in the 1960s, and it specialized in teaching students the fundamentals of technical work. With every passing year, DeVry expanded its curriculum and the degree programs that it offered to students. In 1957, it offered its first associate degree. DeVry’s first bachelor’s degree came in 1969 for electronics engineering technology.

DeVry merged with the Keller Graduate School of Management in 1987. The resulting merger expanded degree programs in accountancy, technology, and business. Master’s degree programs in management fields were also available for students. In 1998, these programs first received approval to be offered online. Other programs began being offered online in 2000, and new degree programs in the biomedical and health information technology field followed three years later.

Since 2000, DeVry has merged with other schools. The acquisition of Ross University in 2003 came first, which is one of the largest veterinary and medical schools in the world. Now the university awards both doctor of veterinary medicine (D.V.M.) and doctor of medicine (M.D.) degrees. Chamberlain College of Nursing was acquired in 2005, which offers nursing degrees ranging from the associate to master’s level. Advanced Academics, which is a leader in providing online secondary education, was acquired in 2007, and Apollo College, Western Career College, and Fanor followed shortly after in 2008 and 2009.

DeVry does offer some payment plans for students to pay the balances on their accounts. An installment plan is available. It allows for the student to pay, at a minimum, their tuition charges on registration day. They will have to pay off the remaining balance by the fourth week of classes. If students are receiving tuition reimbursement from their employers, a direct billing plan from DeVry to the employer can be set up, as well.

A helpful feature offered by DeVry is an online financial aid calculator. This will allow the potential student to figure out how much their education will cost them, and what types of financial aid are available for their use.

DeVry accepts federal direct loans, which are low-interest loans that help pay for education after high school. Rather than needing to find a financial institution to acts as a lender, the lender is the U.S. Department of Education. These loans offer a variety of repayment plans for the student to choose from, and if necessary the student can change their repayment plan later.

Other types of loans include the Federal Perkins Loan, which requires the student to borrow directly from DeVry, and the Federal Stafford Loan, where students or parents will borrow from the PLUS Loan Program. Loans from private sources will help to pay expenses not covered by federal and state financial aid. These are loans from banks or other lending institutions, and they have competitive interest rates. Most loans in this category will require a credit check to determine whether or not the loan will be approved.

DeVry also accepts military benefits such as tuition assistance for tuition payment. Army tuition assistance, for example, will pay up to $250 per semester hour for qualified soldiers, with a fiscal year cap of $4,500. In order to qualify for tuition assistance, the soldier needs to be a satisfactory participant in the Army with no flags on his or her record. They must then apply for tuition assistance through their military education center, and once approved, they will print off their approved vouchers showing how much tuition assistance they had been granted. Soldiers utilizing tuition assistance must reapply for it for every term’s worth of classes.
