Confessions of a College Graduate e1

Monday, October 26th, 2009

graduateIntro:  This is the first in my journals as a college graduate.  Life after academia is pretty insane, and through my experiences you can be ready for it when it comes.  Enjoy!

I graduated 3 months ago (in July).  Since then my world has flipped around, life is nothing like it was, and frankly I miss school.  I got a great full time job (I’m the E-Communications Recruiter for my university), I’ll soon move out and get my own place (I have a roommate now), and I’ll start the parent negotiations for marriage with my fiance soon (if you don’t know how the indian culture works as far as marriage is concerned, I advise you to stay away…!).  All in all, things are really good for me, especially considering how things are going for so many other college graduates. Time to Get Motivated

Good work ethic and good studying techniques are key to doing well at college, but frequent readers of Zen College Life already know that.  Without a key part of the formula, however, we sometimes find ourselves feeling lost and find the journey pointless.  That key part is Motivation.   With endless deadlines seemingly approaching and the ever-increasing stress that comes with them, it is important to remember what your motivation for being at college is, why you are studying, and what you are studying for.  A simple, short reflection or reminder can help a studying session actually feel worth doing for those who often procrastinate. If you find that when conjuring motivation you find that you aren’t headed where you want or becoming who you want, press the emergency evacuation button and find what it is you are truly seeking. Cool Fads From Our Younger Years

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

This is a less ‘useful’ post, but definitely entertaining.  Remember all the cool fads from our younger years?  Well a friend of mine and I were trying to remember a few of them, and these are the ones we came up with.  Enjoy your journey back to yesteryear. (more…)

friendsThe new school year is just about to begin (Welcome to college, class of 2013).  And with a new class coming in there are plenty of ways to start off college.  Here at ZCL we want you to start ahead of the pack.  We imagine that if you start ahead, you definitely have a better chance of ending ahead, right?

So with that in mind, we present you, Class of 2013, with a small gift.  There is a wonderful little series that we have created, and first shared with the Class of 2012, that we think will boost your speed at the starting line.  (more…)

Grades and the Heisman Award

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

heismanOver the last few years of watching I’ve noticed in interviews and T.V shows etc. a recurring rhetoric with winning of the Heisman award and the notion that this will automatically make one a star and ultimately a success in the professional league. This completely misses the point. The Heisman is awarded; purely to the player who shows outstanding sportsmanship during the college football season not to the player who is most likely to be a triumph in the big league.

When Heisman winners finally enter the hallowed land of professional football they are analyzed and spoke of in a different manner than everybody else. If they don’t immediately start churning out stellar performances weekly they are looked upon with dismay, confusion and can unfortunately be labeled as a bust extremely quicker than other players. All these people have missed the whole point of the award. (more…)

The “How-hard-could-this-be?” Ideology

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

karl-marxSince starting  college I have increasingly (and unawaringly) began challenges in a way that I have named the “How-hard-could-this-actually-be” Ideology. Simply, when facing a tough challenge in life, be it an essay, a job interview or a scholarship application  I simply say to myself “how hard can this actually be” which primes me with motivation and confidence to do just about anything.

It started when I was doing laps for a sports team tryout and I was seconds away from pulling out due to me being fatigued and unfit, a flash came across my memory of a scene from the movie Dodgeball. When the main character, as timely as my moment of despair bumps into Lance Armstrong, an athelete whom many may be familiar with. I thought to myself of the struggles that he has had to overcome in life, and  what he has accomplished and then compared them to my measly laps, which provided me with the motivation to carry and not drop out. This ideology has stuck with me ever since. (more…)
