8 Easy Ways to Eat Healthy in College

Written by Ibrahim on November 17, 2008 – 12:28 pm -

sushi-400x265 8 Easy Ways to Eat Healthy in College

I know what you are thinking.  Eating healthy is difficult in college.  It’s expensive, takes too long, and just isn’t important enough right now.  Sadly, this is how many college students feel, and by the time they are ready to change into a healthier lifestyle they’ve already developed terrible habits.  And anyone who has made the switch to eating healthy knows that bad eating habits are pretty much the hardest habits to break.  To help you make the switch, I will offer you a few tips.  This will not be a quick process by any means, but you know what they say, “Slow and steady wins the race.”  Oh, and it will be easy, cheap, won’t take long, and is the most important step you could possibly make for your future life.

Tip #1 - Nothing too Drastic

This will make your transition into healthy eating easier and more enjoyable.  Don’t start shopping at wholefoods, don’t start eating only organic, don’t become a vegetarian (unless you want to). Read more »

120 Day Challenge: Washboard Abs

Written by Ibrahim on November 11, 2008 – 11:27 am -

abs 120 Day Challenge: Washboard Abs

I’ve been very disciplined in my fitness lately.  For 10 weeks now I’ve been working out 6 times a week without fail.  But to make things more interesting I’ve decided to set an extreme challenge for myself, a goal that if acheived will feel like an ultimate victory.  I’ve decided to modify my fitness and diet to lower my body fat percentage to between 8 and 10 percent, or visible abdominal muscles, as the pic above clearly defines (ladies, wipe the drool).  So, yeah, I want a 6 pack.

I’m hoping to have a few bloggers take up this challenge as well, for a little extra motivation, so if you are interested let me know, and I’ll share links to all of your progress as well. Read more »

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Written by Ibrahim on October 2, 2008 – 8:46 am -

1556338019_e21e7f8f40 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I have to admit that I am not very well informed on breast cancer.  At least not as well as I should be.  I learned a thing or two about it in Genetics, and I’m sure I’ll get the chance to learn more later in my science career, but for being a biology student with a strong interest in healthcare, I just don’t know enough.  Breast cancer claims the lives of over 500,000+ people annually.  Many of us know someone who is or was affected by breast cancer.  Seeing as how October is the national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I thought I’d spice things up around Zen College Life to help raise awareness! Patience, The Greatest Virtue of All

Written by Ibrahim on September 29, 2008 – 9:29 am -

patience-400x247 Patience, The Greatest Virtue of All

“Learn the art of patience. Apply discipline to your thoughts when they become anxious over the outcome of a goal. Impatience breeds anxiety, fear, discouragement and failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness, and a rational outlook, which eventually leads to success.” -Brian Adams

Who knew Brian Adams was so philosophical.  But he got it right, patience creates confidence, decisiveness, a rational outlook, which eventually leads to success.  We are 2+ weeks post Hurricane Ike, and though I didn’t feel the hurt of the hurricane, the damage around the city and surrounding cities and the power outages have given me the grand opportunity of exercising patience. 223674828_5450ac2484-400x300 Whats all this Zen about?

I was recently approached by a student doing a paper on the Evolution of Zen.  She asked some pretty important questions, and I thought it would be a good idea to post them along with the answers here.  Maybe this will help us remember the importance and significance of everything we do in this life.  This one gets a bit deep.  Enjoy! Find Your “Kokomo” to Melt Away Stress

Written by Ibrahim on September 8, 2008 – 1:20 pm -

tropic-400x266 Find Your Kokomo to Melt Away Stress

School is on, full fledged.  I’m already only a week away from my first big test, Human Physiology.  It’s not going to be easy, and I’m already feeling the heat.  Stress left unmanaged can ruin us, especially students.  We not only have to worry about the stress of studying, but also the test taking.  No matter how much you’ve studied, we all still feel it.  But isn’t it strange how once you turn in the test, once you are finished, once you let go, all the stress goes away?  What if you could make that happen before the test was over? Maybe even before the test started? Read more »

Achieve Michael Phelps-like Success

Written by Ibrahim on September 3, 2008 – 12:42 pm -

michael-phelps Achieve Michael Phelps-like Success

Michael Phelps is probably the most well known Olympian today. He holds 16 Olympic Medals, 8 of which he won recently in Beijing.   His success, though, is no accident.  He’s no freak of nature, nor is he genetically engineered to swim.  Phelps attributes his success to his hard work, dedication, planning, and practicing.   He practices 365 days a year, with 2-a-day practices 145 days a year.  With this much hard work and dedication, it’s almost impossible to not do well. Medical Maladies: Fact or Fiction

Written by farahk on June 7, 2008 – 12:20 am -

501775_illness Medical Maladies: Fact or Fiction

As Americans we tend to get caught up in periodic fads that rise up suddenly, washing us away in trendy nothingness, only to disappear as quickly as they came. Beanie babies, 24” spinners, and our odd fascination with actresses who barely register on the talent scale all came in and became the source of water cooler small talk for a few months only to pass away. Though most of our nation’s preoccupations are harmless, some, like the low carb diet, can pose a serious health threat. Other public scares are deemed unhealthy though they pose seemingly no risk at all. For this reason, a list dispelling some rumors and clarifying some murky claims is necessary to keep us all informed and healthy.
