The United States offers some of the best colleges in the world to study music. Whether it is for performance, education, or even the business aspects in music, there are many great colleges to choose from. Below is a list and small description of the top ten colleges for music as of 2010.
The Juilliard School is the most famous name on this list, and is located in New York City. It is a highly exclusive school only accepting about 5% of the people who apply to go there. Overall student population is about 800.
The Eastman School also an exclusive school accepting about 13% of it's applicants, it is located in Rochester, New York. Overall student population is about 900. It has a higher concentration of foreign students then other colleges.
The Oberlin Conservatory is the oldest conservatory in the United States, located in Oberlin, Ohio, with around 1,400 students, and is known for having a competitive audition process. In 2009, Oberlin received the National Medal of Arts. This award is the highest award given by the United States government for recognition of their contributions and creative expression.
Jacobs School of Music
The Jacobs School of Music is part of Indiana University located in Bloomington, Indiana, which has around 1,600 students. The university also has the second largest enrollment accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Overall has an acceptance rate of 25% of its applicants. Most of the applicants are vocalists so the school is very selective in terms of whom they admit as a vocal major.
Lawrence University located in Appleton, Wisconsin, Lawrence University is a liberal arts college that offers a Bachelor degree in Music, and further offers a double degree (music and liberal arts) to students enrolled in the music program. This program is five years. The school has about 1,400 students enrolled.
New England Conservatory
New England Conservatory has about 750 students perusing degrees in music, Bachelors of Music, Masters of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts. This conservatory also offers a five-year joint double degree program with both Harvard and Tufts University. The school has an acceptance rate of around 30% and is based on live auditions. The college was also designated as a national historic landmark, because of its primary concert hall, Jordan Hall, which hosts over 600 concerts a year.
Mannes College located on the upper west side of New York City, Mannes College of Music, which promotes the well roundedness of their music students in their area of study. Most of the faculty frequent the New York music scene whether it be the Metropolitan Opera, or work as freelance musicians.
Rice University is the home of the Shepherd School of music located in Houston, Texas. In the past 30 years since its formation has become one of the most prestigious music schools in the country, known to emphasize Orchestral and Chamber music.
University of Michigan
University of Michigan is located in Ann-Arbor, Michigan. Has over 14,000 students in 600 different programs, music offering just a small slice of what this university offers. The music school itself only has around 1,000 students.
Berklee School of Music
Berklee School of music is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and is known as being the largest independent college of contemporary music in the world. It primary focus is of jazz and commercial music. It has successfully kept pace with the changing styles and landscape in the commercial music world. Berklee has about 4,000 students enrolled.
