HP DV6 Laptop: A Review

As I said before, I was recently contacted with a great opportunity to test a laptop and netbook package with the opportunity to offer a great discount to you, my favorite readers.  I accepted the offer, and have been relying on these two computers (rather than my super computer) for all of my computing needs. This has lasted about 3 weeks now (maybe a little more), and I’ve really gotten to know these machines.  While there are a few things that I feel I’m missing with the switch, I can honestly say that this package is the perfect solution to any college student’s computing needs.

This is a powerhouse of a laptop.  In fact, this laptop has convinced me that I don’t need a Mac.  With a powerful processor, massive amounts of memory, and an amazing 500 gigabytes of hard drive space, I find it hard to criticise this machine.  It comes with Windows Vista, which in the past I haven’t enjoyed much, but on this rig it runs quickly and smoothly.  Let’s dive into the details, shall we?

The screen is a 16 inch widescreen.  This is quite large, and the quality of the screen is really nice.  I’ve also connected an external monitor for some hardcore computing (my supercomputer has 3 monitors), and while it doesn’t replace my 3 monitor set up, it does well enough that I can recommend it to any student without fear.  This laptop also has a blu-ray player, which is pretty awesome, especially considering it also has HDMI output (to connect to your HDTV).

The graphics card on this computer is absolutely amazing.  I’m always prepared to dislike a laptop based on weak graphics performance, but the DV6 has run everything I put against it, without hesistation.  For the computer geek in you, I’ll share what I’ve tested: F.E.A.R., Burnout Paradise, GRID, Battlefield 2, Company of Heroes, GTA San Andreas, and Call of Duty: World at War.  Each of them has been a delight on this machine.

The keyboard and trackpad (touch mouse) are glossy and smooth, giving the laptop a really nice feel.  The laptop also has a white glossy finish, with a light up HP emblem on the outside, which looks really cool.  The battery isn’t any more impressive than any other laptop, but when you treat this like a desktop replacement, you won’t be using the battery all that often anyways.  That’s what the netbook is for right?

These computers also come with a software called Syncables, which syncs documents, music, and all of your other important files between computers.  I haven’t really done much beyond setting this software up and syncing a few files, but I can see how this could really be useful to any college student.
