Summer time!

School is over, people start to look for [intlink id="1570" type="post"]jobs during the holiday[/intlink], to make some extra money. Of course, that is one of the best things to do after the exams. But most of the times these jobs are boring, not that good paid and even soul-destroying! Are there other options? Of course!

How to select the job, instead of being selected by the job
The main tool of getting a well paid, interesting and instructive job is ‘showing guts.’ You need to show some courage to get good jobs!

  • Look further than the job board at the nearest mall. There is more than that!
  • Don’t just check the vacancies in the paper, go find jobs yourself! Email companies, ask the people who work there: ‘Are there any jobs available for me?’
  • Do something you are good at, do you have something with science? Try to work at a research company. Email/call them and most important: Tell them it’s your passion! They are more likely to hire you if they know that it’s your passion and you love to work there. That is the most beautiful thing about human beings, they love to help each other (most of the time). If a successful entrepreneur sees you and you say that you want to become as successful as he is, he will be more helpful towards you.
  • Get out there and say it out loud. Tell everyone you are looking for an interesting job these months. If a lot of people know about it, you have a ‘great-tip-getting’ guarantee!

Some examples.
First of all, myself. In Holland most of the younger people work at groceries or in the catering branch. I didn’t want to. I am going to study Medicine next year, so I wanted to work in the hospital. I just went to the hospital and asked: ‘Is there any job for me here?’ Yes, there was, I could do some cleaning, ‘fill in your résumé please.’ In that résumé I said I wanted to study Medicine, and I got the answer: ‘Ah, you want to study Medicine? I maybe have something more interesting!’ And now I can give the food to patients. Of course, still not a fantastic job, but the best there is in a hospital without any diploma!

Second, a friend of mine who wants to study Economics next year. He worked at the supermarket first, but then he wanted to do something else. He didn’t looked at vacancies anymore, but he just asked at ING (a Dutch bank) ‘Are there any jobs for a high school student?’ And indeed, there were. Now he is some sort of assistant. He deals with the paperwork, filing and all. Not the best job, but he sees a lot of the banking world. He gets some info once in a while from the other employees there.

Conclusion
Get out there, show guts and get a good job. Even in the recession are there tons of good jobs for students, you know it, you only have to act like it!
