Never Remember a Password Again

by admin on January 27, 2009

In this hustle and bustle, dog eat dog, never ending daily cycle we call life we are expected to keep up with so many passwords; email, social networks, banks, credit cards, other websites, and so much more.  It can become a real hassle.  And we all know it’s not safe to use the same password over and over.  Believe me, I learned that the hard way.  My paypal account was hacked and I lost almost $3,000 (paypal repaid me, but it was a 3 week hassle…)  But with my trusty method, you’ll never have to remember a password ever again.

It’s crazy enough to work. Not only that, but it takes into consideration password lengths, upper and lowercases, and symbols if required.

First of all decide on a default length.  For simplicity sake, i’ll use 10 (some sites will require more, and I’ll show you how it still works with 10 later).  Then, for security sake, we’ll use 5 letters and 5 numbers for every password we need to remember.  Now we just implement a system.

The 5 letters come from whatever type of account it is.  For instance, if it is a yahoo account, we will use

“yahoo”

or if you really wanna spice it up, reverse the letters, and get

“oohay”

Then we need 5 secure numbers.  This you will need to remember, but you’ll be using the same ones for the rest of your life, so it shouldn’t be difficult.  For this example lets use 12345.

So your yahoo password will be

“yahoo12345.”

and the rest would be as follows

hotmail password – hotma12345
paypal password – paypa12345
google password – googl12345

Now what if you needed a capital letter?  We just capitalize the first letter.

hotmail password – Hotma12345

Now what if a symbol is required?  Simple.  Use the same symbol all of the time.  And always put it at the end. For this example I will use an exclamation mark.

hotmail password – hotma12345!

And if caps and a symbol is required…

hotmail password – Hotma12345!

And finally, if a length being 10 is required, use the symbol repeatedly to match the length.  Lets say hotmail requires a minimum password length of 12.

hotmail password – hotma12345!!

And that’s pretty much it.  You can tweak the system to your liking.  It will take a little adjustment to get used to, but rest assured, once you learn it you can use that brain of yours for more important things, like solving world hunger, or ending war.

Any other tips to help the system, or to keep us from having to remember a hundred passwords?  Leave a comment, we’d love to hear them.

This seems like a really insecure way to create passwords. Most of the computer geeks I know (I go to a tech school) could guess these passwords rather quickly.

Maybe you are right, but fundamentally it is a good start. I obviously don’t use this system, it’s a bit too simple, but I also wouldn’t explain exactly what I do, as this would not be very safe…
