If you only read one extracurricular document this semester, let it be the most important one.  Let it be the  document that has influenced millions if not billions of lives since its debut on Sept. 17, 1787.  Let it be the document that has done more to influence your life than your parents, teachers, and mentors combined.  It has given you the right to live your life the way you choose.  It has given you the freedom to speak how you feel without being persecuted.  It has allowed you to practice the religion of your choice, protect yourself with arms, vote, own land, and so much more.

In case you haven’t yet figured it out (and I’m sure you have, you educated college students) I’m talking about the United States of America Constitution.  I have recently come across a fantastic resource that will send you a free copy of the United States Constitution, as well as the Declaration of Independence.  You don’t even have to pay shipping.

Statistics show that less than 40% of Americans have read and understand the constitution.  If we are the generation that is going to change the way the US does business, if we are going to change the world’s perception of Americans, if we are going to make the difference, we need to get back to what makes this great nation so great.

We need to understand the foundation of this great country, the document that changed the world when those great men agreed to form a democratic nation.  We need to stop taking our freedoms for granted and start understanding our rights, and it is imperative that we know the document that grants us that freedom.

It’s not as bad as you remember from elementary school.  In fact, the founding fathers actually made it quite easy.  They wrote it on 5 pages.  We can all take the time to read 5 of the most important pages of our lives, can’t we?
