simplicity-400x266 The Simple Life

I got back to Houston thursday, and I’ve gotta say, I’ve never seen anything quite this bad.  Trees were uprooted and thrown around, fences had all but blown away, power was out at every other street light, and damage was everywhere.  But there is one thing I noticed that I would have never expected.

Nobody was down, depressed, or sad in any way.  Everyone was glad to be alive, happy to be able to rebuild, and generally cared for their neighbors the way they cared for their families.  Sure roofs were in need of repair, and trees needed to be cut down, there was plenty of work to be done everywhere, but it was a team effort.  One person would lend his chainsaw, while his neighbor helped with the fence.  It was a truly fantastic experience, people enjoying the simple life  (minus the whole chaotic hurricane thing).

I came home to a house with power, and not a shingle was missing off of my roof.  The only damage we sustained was the gate on our fence was ripped off.

What i learned over this last week was a great lesson indeed;  Material wealth doesn’t matter.  Not that it isn’t as important, or that it’s less important.  It doesn’t matter at all.  Had I not had this computer to write this article, I would have written it from my phone, and had I not had my phone I would have visited my university’s computer lab.  We are resilient.  We keep going.  We find a way.  We are much simpler than we think.

My heart goes out to everyone who has sustained any damage or injury during Hurricane Ike.

It looks as though I will be able to continue writing for Zen College Life, so check again real soon or subscribe to get fast access to all of the newest articles.  Subscription is free and you’ll get countless tips to simplify, organize and improve your college life.

Lets have a great week everybody!
