Weekly Focus: Smell The Roses

Smell the Roses

Happy Monday everyone. The weather here in Houston, Texas is supposed to get really nasty tonight, so the school closed and I’m working from home! It’s a lot easier to get distracted here, but I’ll do my best.

This week the focus is going to be on enjoying life. Too often we get caught up in “the rat race,” and we work so hard trying to achieve goals that we never stop to “Smell The Roses.” (excuse the cliche) This obviously isn’t the best way to go about living our lives. Every once in a while it is important that we get out of the library, studyhall, (insert where you study here). It’s a good practice to take inventory of nature, to observe what is around you, to “Smell The Roses.” (I wonder how many times I can say that in this post)

I notice that sometimes I become so goal oriented and focused on getting things done, that I forget that life isn’t just about conquering the next item on my to-do list. Sometimes life is just about savoring the moment.  To-do lists, goals, and appointments all have their place, but without the beauty that is life why are we doing all of this?  Why are we working so hard, if not to enjoy what we were already given?  My guess is that you don’t want to wait till 65 to retire, so why wait to enjoy the world today?

This week I will try to slow down and enjoy life.  I will take a walk (assuming the hurricane doesn’t blow my house away), I will take a deep breath of that wonderful fresh air,  I will sit under a tree, I will feel the dirt, and who knows, I may even pick up a bug (ewwww, gross). Haha.  This week I will take it all in, I’ll stop and “Smell the Roses!”  I think you should too!

And you better hurry, cause with GLOBAL WARMING who knows how long the roses will be around.

I love your blog and this post really made me think :)
Just today I went on a fishing trip for the first time in a long time, and I realized that I work too hard and sometimes you just gotta relax and enjoy what is good in life. Keep up the great posts!

I too am waiting to ride out Eduard. Hurricanes, natural disasters, etc. make you think deep thoughts about these things.

@Alec – It looks like we are in the clear, I don’t think there was much damage caused by Eduard. I hope all is well with you!

Great article! Life’s too short to spend all your time worrying about the next big thing. I plan to enjoy every minute with my someone special as soon as I get the chance :-)
