street-triple-400x288 Hobbies: Daily Vacations, Therapy, Sparkles for Your Smile, and so much more

I am a firm believer in the importance of having hobbies.  I diverge myself in so many hobbies that I don’t know what to do with myself.  I build websites (professionally and for fun), blog (also professionally and for fun), ride a motorcycle, play computer games, play guitar, sing, work with electronics, play sports once in a while, and much, much more.  I don’t know what I would do without a good hobby or two.

Dangers of Not Having Hobbies

I have a friend or two that I noticed have no hobbies.  I’m not saying they have a couple that they aren’t really great at, or have some that they don’t enjoy, these people actually have none.  Their lives revolve around one single commitment, whether it be a career, a significant other, school, or whatever.  Now I’m no psychologist, but there must to be tremendous negative effects to having no buffer, no distraction, no getaway from the daily grind of things.  Just imagine what life would be like if they failed at their ’single commitment.’  For example, if you placed your entire identity in being the perfect student, and you were successful, all would be great.  But imagine what would happen to your self esteem when you failed that one class.  You would be devastated.

Therapy

Having hobbies is like having a getaway plan.  When things aren’t going well in my daily life, or I just need a distraction, there is always my motorcycle to jump on, my guitar to help me let it out, computer games to distract me (or even the fiance ).  I have tons of ways to pick myself up.

Sparkles for Your Smile

Hobbies also they enrich life.  Hobbies give you depth.  I sat in calculus on the first day, and our professor asked us when he checked attendance to say something interesting about ourselves as we were called.  I was amazed at how many people had nothing to say, or copied some cookie-cutter statement the person before them said.  I couldn’t decide what part about my life was most interesting.  I didn’t want to show off, but I was interested in all of the things I did.  I felt like explaining the interesting things about me was like adding extra sparkle to my smile.  It let everyone know that Ibrahim was in the room.

I don’t want to think that nobody in my calculus class is interesting.  But if you don’t think you are interesting, you wont sound interesting when you talk, and nobody will find you interesting.  And, though it may stink, people don’t want to be friends with others that they have no interest in.

Hobbies are an amazing thing.  It doesn’t matter which hobby you choose, it only matters that you have a few when you need them.  The only negative thing I can say about hobbies is that sometimes you submerge yourself into a hobby so deeply that it affects your day to day life.

If that is the worst that could happen, I think it’s safe to say that hobbies are here to stay!

(here are a couple of my favorites. My bike, my guitar, my personal site, and my favorite game)

Great article. Here’s a thought: if you love to play guitar so much that you become a professional at it and spend most of your time touring and playing, then is playing guitar still your hobby? I love being a student, and I’m fairly good at it, and even when I get a job I’ll still probably be a student, so maybe making a career out of your hobby is the best idea for self-fulfillment. I hope I continue to enjoy my hobby of education for the rest of my life.
